OLD BAY Names Alonso’s Winner

of “Taste of Baytriotism” Restaurant Promotion

Roland Park restaurant wins award and 70 pounds of OLD BAY

for having the most innovative Taste of Baytriotism menu

SPARKS, Md. (July 25, 2012) – Bacon-wrapped oysters with OLD BAY butter, “Peachy Keen” crab cakes and OLD BAY chocolate ice cream are just a few of the items that earned Alonso’s Restaurant in Roland Park the bragging rights and an award of 70 pounds of OLD BAY Seasoning in the brand’s first-ever “Taste of Baytriotism” restaurant promotion. More than 35 restaurants across Baltimore and Annapolis demonstrated their creativity with food and beverage menus spotlighting Maryland’s favorite flavor from June 22 – 30. Finalists in the competition included Harryman House in Reisterstown, Manor Tavern in Monkton, and Sláinte Irish Pub and Kooper’s Tavern, all located in Fells Point.

Alonso’s was named the winner by a panel of OLD BAY experts including Rob Kasper, retired Baltimore Sun food and features columnist and author of the book Baltimore Beer: A Satisfying History of Charm City Brewing. Seventy (one-pound) cans of OLD BAY were bestowed upon the winner in honor of the seasoning’s 70 years.

“OLD BAY is a favorite on restaurant menus across Maryland, but Taste of Baytriotism encouraged chefs to take the seasoning to the next level,” said Kasper. “It was a tough choice, but Alonso’s really impressed us. They put an interesting spin on summer classics such as oysters, chicken and crab cakes, while highlighting the versatility of OLD BAY. And, any chef that can incorporate OLD BAY into ice cream and still make it taste great gets high marks in my book.”

The Alonso’s Taste of Baytriotism menu included the following dishes:

Oysters – Applewood bacon-wrapped oysters with OLD BAY butter.

Chicken Wings – Grilled chicken wings braised in a sherry and OLD BAY marinade, served with celery and blue cheese.

Peachy Keen Crab Cakes – Two jumbo lump crab cakes with peach, mint, roasted garlic, onion and OLD BAY. Served with citrus-cilantro rice and green beans.

Chesapeake Bay Chicken – Apple cider-marinated chicken breast breaded in OLD BAY bread crumbs, deep fried and topped with crab and chorizo dip. Served with roasted potatoes and corn.

“We love OLD BAY at Alonso’s and are thrilled to be named the winner of Taste of Baytriotism,” said Sebastian Trossbach, head chef at Alonso’s restaurant. “OLD BAY has been a key ingredient in our dishes for years, and we jumped at the chance to create an OLD BAY-specific menu highlighting the seasoning. Thanks to our impressive new stash of OLD BAY, Alonso’s patrons can expect to see even more of it on the menu.”
